Cere colour/breeding condition: The female cere will change colour this is part of the breeding cycle whether the Budgie-Parakeet is in a breeding set up or not. Dark brown on the cere is the end of the cycle and it slothes off to a whitish pale blue..it then starts a-new to a pale cookie brown to a dark brown again. Cookie brown is prime breeding condition. Scaly Mites: This mite lives deep under the birds skin in non feathered areas such as cere/around the beak/feet/legs/vent, you do not see the mite, what you see is the waste product of the mite. it is a crusty pale whitish tan colour. Over the counter meds will not get rid of the problem most of these are for feather type mites. You would need to see a Vet for the med of choice this is called IVERMECTIN it is a wonderful speedy cure and very safe as directed by your Avian Vet. If you have other budgies treat these also and be sure to clean everything in the cage very very well--replace the purches. yw : female parakeet, 3-4 years old, nostrils turned dark color and began to break down. I didn't catch what was going on until past few days. She is very shy and stays to back of large cage when I feed and water. What is this and what can I do for her??? vitamins? cuddle bone? greens? fruit? what??? Help!
