: : : : My norwich hen Hyacinth started to wheeze late Sat nite, she wheezed off and on all day on Sunday, Sunday nite she slept without the labored breathing and started up wheezing 1st thing this morn. I brought her to my vetinarian hosp, but the 2 aviary doctors are off today. They have her in an incubator there tonite and the avian doctors will check her tomorrow. I don't think she has mites because the other 2 canarys don't and they have only been in contact with one another. Is there a kind of medication 'SCAT'? or antibiotic that birds can take for a respiratory prblm? She is the only one with this problem and I didn't want to let it go since I was afraid it could be fatal or contagious to the other birds. The vet hosp is expensive, but they couldn't guarantee me that I would be able to take her home today and have her seen tomorrow because they book up very fast. Do I have to worry about the other canarys if she does have a respiratory prblm...thanks Judy

: : : Hello Judy:
: : : It does not sound like air sack mites. I had a canary who had air sack mites and it sounded more like clicking which is also a cough. They are also very dangerous.

: : : However it sounds as though your bird could have a respiratory infection which should be treated as that can also be dangerous. Unfortunately in canaries the slightest thing is dangerous.
: : : I wish you luck and please keep us posted.

: : Unfortunately Hyacinth died today. The vets called me at 11am and she was completely healthy eating jumping around no runny droppings and they were going to do blood work and other tests. They gave her Epinephrine injection and Atropine. I got a call from the vet at 12:30p saying call it's an emergency. They were getting ready to do the workup when she collapsed and they put her on oxigen. Her lungs filled up completely with fluid and she couldn't breathe. She was starting to ovulate and they mentioned a soft mass in her body...tumor?? cancer??..They couldn't tell because she was so small. They had me bring in the male norwich and he was examined and is fine, incase what she had was infectious..They want me to watch him and the gloster closely and bring them in if they show any symptoms. It was an infection of some kind, by the way they didn't see any air sac mites. If I hadn't of left her overnite at the hospital she would have died in the cage at home. Do you have any ideas what happened, their diagnosis read: DYSPINEA...another thing mentioned by the vet was 'air sacculitis'
Hi Judy:
I am so sorry that your little hen passed away. It sounds as though she had a very bad lung infection. I know you must feel terrible. Poor little bird. I hate to see that happen to these little birds but at times no matter what we do the do get sick and we can't save them. I hope your other canary will not get sick. If the other canary is well and has been checked out he swhould be ok. If you use the cage that Hyacinth was in I would give it a real good cleaning and if possible disinfect it.
Good Luck and please keep us posted. I am really sorry Judy.
Grace
