: hi, how can i get my canaries to mate now? i'm presuming they are a pair, so would like to encourage breeding, how can i do this? any particular food changes or anything to get them in the mood?! Hi Charlotte: If you live in the United States this is not the time to mate canaries. From around February until about May or June is when canaries should mate. After that they usually moult. For now you should have them in separate cages. The male is very territorial and likes his own space. He will sing more if he has his own cage. If these birds do happen to be males you will know for sure and in that case they should be separated before one hurts the other as one will want to dominate the other and the less dominant one may not get the food and be very under nourished so please separate them. In the Spring you can first of all place the cages close together and if they show interest in each other you can put them back together but do this slowly. Good Luck and please keep us posted. Grace
