Only after examining the bird will a veterinarian or experienced bird keeper be able to determing if the beak should be trimmed. Yes, definitely do spray the other bird! Even after the problem is under control both birds should be sprayed once a week in the Summer months and once a month in the Winter. To prevent mites, basically, ALL birds should be sprayed regularly with a pyrethrin solution. : Thanks so much! Am I correct in assuming that I should NOT cut his beak down for him? Will he break it off himself or should I wait until he is better? He is still eating and drinking fine. : I also have another parakeet in another cage - should I spray him as a preventative measure? I would assume so. : Thanks so much! : : Your bird is afflicted by a mite infestation. : : Every day for a week spray (lightly) the bird and the immediate area around the cage with an avian insecticide that contains .05% pyrethrin as the active ingredient. Then, to keep the problem from returning, spray once a week.
