Hi, A book I have found useful is "The New Canary Handbook" by M.M.Vriends, Barron's 1992, it is available from Amazon and has a section on diseases. Without knowing other symptoms it is impossible to say what killed your bird. Sounds like the male may be ok but if you want to be on the safe side keep him isolated for a while for observation and to protect your other birds. He can rejoin them once you are satisfied. : Before you tell me to see a vet, I know that is the answer, but I live in northern Manitoba. This is a small town farming community. There are no vets that understand birds. I have tried. : One of my female canaries is puffed out and keeps opening and closing her beak as though she is having trouble breathing. I have no idea what may be wrong with her. If there is nobody that can give advice I will have to just watch her die, or put her out of her missery. She recently was with a male and laid eggs in an empty nest without building it up, although material was available. I am very concerned because I have other birds in the house. Three other pairs have bred, and there are 12 juveniles out of the nest and one hen sitting. Is there anyone that would give advice? If not to the list, possibly contact me off line.
