: : Before you tell me to see a vet, I know that is the answer, but I live in northern Manitoba. This is a small town farming community. There are no vets that understand birds. I have tried.
: : One of my female canaries is puffed out and keeps opening and closing her beak as though she is having trouble breathing. I have no idea what may be wrong with her. If there is nobody that can give advice I will have to just watch her die, or put her out of her missery. She recently was with a male and laid eggs in an empty nest without building it up, although material was available. I am very concerned because I have other birds in the house. Three other pairs have bred, and there are 12 juveniles out of the nest and one hen sitting. Is there anyone that would give advice? If not to the list, possibly contact me off line.
: Hello Lyn:
: I tried to help you 3 times but somehow my message gets deleted so please send me your e-mail address abd I will try to help you.
: Grace
Thanks Grace. I tried to Email you, but am not sure I got through. The canary died, but I would still like to know if my other birds are in danager. There are 3 other pairs with 12 juveniles and one hen setting. The bird I was hoping to help had laid eggs in a nest that she didn't build up, even though there were nesting materials present. She sat for a few days and then destroyed the eggs one at a time. After that she started sitting puffed up part of the time and spent the rest of her time sitting with her beak in the seed cup, eating. She seemed to eat more than usual. Then for one day she just sat puffed up, opening and closing her beak, like she was having trouble breathing or swallowing. Should I be concerned for the male that was in the cage with her? He seems to be fine and is doing a lot of singing. I guess he is hoping to attract another female.
I have another hen that laid eggs in an unfinished nest. She built her nest, took it apart and laid in the empty basket, but she seems okay and has been on the eggs for about a week.
