Well, the molting will consist of every feather being replaced over a period of a
month or two, but it doesn't result in bare patches or major loss all at once.
Otherwise it would affect a bird's flight ability and that wouldn't be good for survival
in the wild. Usually they molt symmetrically, like a certain feather on one wing is
dropped and the exact same feather on the opposite wing is dropped shortly
thereafter. As far as tail feathers, these fall out slowly, one at a time and you really
shouldn't notice any real visual change except you can find one dropped tail feather
in the cage and then you could see the new one growing in as a pin feather initially.
But really the only sign in a healthy molt is feathers on the cage bottom and the bird
getting sharp, pointy feathers as the new ones grow in. Also, if the birds are boys,
they still may court one another and "play house". They could be plucking each
other, or one may be plucking the other one. If you see them pulling out feathers,
you have more of a problem than just molting. They will have to be separated if one
is plucking the other. Some diseases also may have feather loss as a symptom. How
do their beaks look? Parakeets can get "psitticine beak and feather disease" which is
serious and is caused by a virus. Can you take some digital photos and email them
to me so I can see the birds?
