Canary FAQ

I have a male canary who was part of a pair that came into our local animal shelter a
year ago. He and his mate hatched out 2 babies and they raised them successfully.
I wouldn't handle them quite yet...they should leave the nest in the next week and
start trying to fly. Wait to let them out until they can fly and land on a perch very
well. If you want to try to tame them, start to handle them as soon as you see them
sitting on the floor. Just don't do it too much while the parents are still feeding
them to avoid them abandoning them, which is unlikely, but may happen if you
interfere too much. I started letting my male out last summer ( I placed his mate
and the babies in new homes after the babies were grown) and he now free flies for
about 5 hours a day with no problems. I am SO GLAD you see the benefit of not
making your canaries live their lives stuck in a cage. They will become much
healthier, more confident and less fearful of humans when they are out and about.
How do you get them back in the cage? My canary puts himself back in around 7:30
at night like clockwork. I never have to net or chase him. He is awesome! He acts
just like a budgie, plays with toys and even hangs out with my quaker parrot who is
his buddy! What did your canaries do the first time you let them out? Did they crash
into anything?
