: I would be careful because budgies are more aggressive, as you seem aware.  You 
: could put a piece of plexiglas on top of the canary's cage when the budgie is 
: out...that's what I do with my quaker to keep him from biting the toes of my 
: budgies and canary when they are out.  They like to sit on his cage, and he did bite 
: off a toe of one of the budgies.  The plexiglas still lets light in, but is solid and will 
: protect your canary and still allow the budgie to sit up there.  The canary probably 
: won't be very interested in him.  My canary gets along well with many of my other 
: hookbills, though.  I let him out along with the rest of the birds, but supervise 
: closely.
