My two loving parakeets laid eight eggs. Two have hatched into beautiful, healthy babies. Today the first one came out of the nesting box. Both parents had been very attentive to caring for the babies until today. If the female tries to get anywhere near the baby who came out the male attacks her. He bites her, flaps his wings and pushes her to the other side of the cage. I haven't seen any indication that she means to harm the baby. He's very busy nuzzling and reassuring the baby and feeding it. I can't find anything in books that tells me about this type of behavior. Meanwhile the second baby is still in the box crying and no one's feeding it because they're too busy fighting. Do I need to take over the care of this second baby? I did read somewhere that if there are two females and one male the females will fight viciously over him. I'm wondering if the baby parakeet is a female that the male is attracted to and he's trying to keep them separated. Also, do parakeets mate with their children?
