My Mom's canaries were temporarily housed together during a move after hurricane Ivan. They'd made a nest and had some eggs, so Mom decided to leave them together until the "waiting" period was over. But what we didn't do was take the eggs out until all of them were laid. Soooo, we weren't sure when exactly her female (Sunny) stopped laying and started sitting only. Her canaries were left together from March until last month. Sunny sat a nest 3 times LOL. But none of her eggs hatched, except they'd get really nasty when Mom tried to seperate them while there were still eggs in the nest, and Sunny wouldn't eat. So Mom HAD to leave them alone until THEY decided to be done. When she noticed the rest of the eggs had been kicked out of the nest onto the cage bottom, she seperated the birds. Apparently there was one more egg to be laid. Two weeks ago my Mom wanted to clean the cages. She doesn't do it often enough, in my opinion. But she keeps the cages up on a high cabinet so that the cats can't get them, so it's hard to see the bottom of the cage to know when it needs cleaning. Anyway, Mom went into the room where the cages were and got up on a step ladder to take down Sunny's cage. She called me I guess a few minutes after that, saying over and over "We have a baby, we have a baby, we have a baby". She'd been hearing little peeping noises but thought it was Sunny talking to Ringo (the male). Nope, it was a baby. By the time we became aware of the baby, he was almost fully feathered. He's been coming out of the nest for about a week now. Mom thinks it's a boy because she "thinks" she heard him singing. However, Ringo is in the same room as Sunny and Baby, so she's not certain that it wasn't Ringo, just pretty certain. Sunny raised the baby all by herself and has been just great at it apparently. Mom has tried feeding the fledgling food and nestling food but Baby doesn't seem to be interested. So, she's letting Sunny do what Sunny is doing, as it seems to be working. Here are a couple of pictures. The first is Baby with Sunny watching from behind him. The second is a shot from underneath them but it shows the only real way for people to tell them apart (and that one is a baby), because Baby has no tail feathers yet. Oh by the way, Ringo and Sunny's toenails do NOT look like that anymore. With hurricane Ivan damaging Mom's house and then the subsequent repair of the house, Mom had to house the birds at my Grandparents until Dad could make the long drive to my place. I didn't know how to trim them so it had to wait until Mom picked them up again.
