Canaries use their perches as a napkin. I would guess that there is some slight oil on the perches remaining from the manufacturing process that is not seen on colored feathers. I'd guess that the small amount of oil will soon disappear. The only immediate solution would be to replace the perches with wooden ones. It's always a good idea to let canaries bathe as often as possible. This will keep the feathers as clean as possible. DO NO use perch covers -- especially the sand paper variety. Perch covers make it very difficult and tiring for a bird to stand on a perch. : We just got a canary 2 weeks ago. He sings, flies, hops around, eats well, etc.
