In Reply to: Q: baby canary's first eggs? posted by Emilie on May 24, 2005 at 15:29:01:
: I have a very juvenile canary with a mate who has laid her first two eggs. The first one broke. The second is perfect, but my mother told me to take it away from her. She said that the little girl is too young to properly care for a clutch. Is this the right thing to do? : If so, when do I allow her to keep her eggs? : Thank you, I appreciate anyone's expert advice on this matter. Peace and Blessings... How old is the female canary? If a canary is old enough to produce eggs, it's old enough to raise the young. Producing eggs is the stressful activity. Letting the hen sit on the eggs provides rest and recuperation. If you don't want the bird to raise young, replace the eggs with an artificial egg (available from pet supplies). Let the bird sit on the artificial eggs for two weeks. If you just keep removing the eggs, this will encourage the bird to keep laying eggs. Over production of eggs can be fatal. A proper diet -- vitamins, mineral grit, cuttlebone, and egg food -- is VERY important during the breeding season! For more ideas, please see the Link.
