I do accept that alot of canaries are simply too nervous to get any pleasure out of
contact. Maybe just allowing the bird to determine if it wants freedom would be the
way to find out if a canary is bold or not? I didn't intentionally force my canary out,
but just let things progress with its natural curiosity. If a bird would get out of the
cage and be immobilized by fear, or be thrashing against walls breathing heavily
etc. then it would be obvious it would not enjoy freedom. But I think more people
ought to at least explore the option of seeing what kind of personality their
individual canary has before they just assume that none of them would want or
enjoy freedom. I know of at least one other person in Iowa who adopted an adult
canary and it is also given free flight, sits on her shoulder and is quite friendly. She
too is involved in hookbill rescue, as I am, and maybe we come into canary
ownership with a different approach, which works with some canaries and maybe is
too stressful for others. I am not saying I know everything (indeed I do not!) but
freedom from caging CAN bring a better life to many birds in captivity. Just food for
thought..I wouldn't want people to force coming out on a bird who might be
petrified of it. Body language of the bird is pretty easy to read....

Thanks...
