: Now that I have used the correct procedure in asking my question~~~~ I read info on this site, I believe, where it was stated that a parakeet's lifespan is relatively short. I was under the understanding that parakeets can have a rather lengthy lifespan....anywhere between 10 years+...some even living 15 years depending on living environment. So please advise, and clear this up for me. As I commented when I initially e-mailed you, I have two parakeets presently, and the male parakeet, Sammy, is some talker. He not only recites nursery rhymes, and quotes Bible scriptures, but can speak Spanish, Italian, and DANCE. Everyone thinks I should video tape him and send it to American Home Video's! Seven years is the average expected lifespan for Keet. For English Budgies, it's five years. For both the American and English varieties, the male lives longer than the female. Certainly -- and particularly with good care -- it's quite possible for Keet to be a cheerful friend for ten years. Fifteen years? Do people live to 130 years? Well, that's a definite MAYBE! Don't use that figure when planning on retirement! Many times people will say that they have had a pet Keet for twenty years. What they mean is that they've had A bird not THAT particular bird. Also, it's not uncommon for a deceased pet to be replaced without telling a child. The young pet owner will then belive that their little guy goes on to live for well over a decade. You might want to give some thought to providing a mate for Sammy. Keets prefer the company of their own kind. Once he becomes a member of a bird family, his focus very well may shift from you to them.
