: Romeo and Juliet are two english parakeets that were given to me about five years ago. I am not sure how long they were together before that. About six months ago, Romeo suddenly died. In the last month or so, Juliet has been laying eggs, something she NEVER did before. Whats going on, anyone know? Female birds produce eggs according to the number of hours of light. They can do this without a male. Of course, unfertilized eggs will not hatch. DO make sure that the bird's diet is rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein. Mineral grit (in a dish) and cuttlebone needs to be in the cage at all times. Producing eggs can exhaust bird and cause death. If egg-laying does not stop, you might need to cut the hours of light down to 8 per day. You can do that by covering the cage with a large cloth in the late afternoon.
