: Hello, : I have a parakeet named Max (a boy) who has recently lost his other cage-mate Mercedes ( a girl). They got a long for the most part but I was really worried that he was lonely after she died. So impulsively, after about 3 weeks, I decided to get him a new cage-mate. : I got a girl, thinking because he had a girl before it wouldn't be a problem. but not that I got her home I am worried. I have them next to each other in different cages, as instructed by the vet. But as I have been reading up I have even heard that I should keep them in separate rooms to train the new bird. : They seem to like each other. They try to get to each other through the cage. She looks so young and tiny, not underweight or anything, but small enough that I think he would over power her. I have heard how the female dies if mating too young. : I know she is too young to mate, and I don't want them too anyway. If i just keep a nest out of the cage will this keep them from mating? Have a made a mistake in getting a female? I don't want to take her back...she is so sweet and cute. Will they ever be able to co-exist? What can I do to make transition safe for both of them? How long will it take before I can unite the two? : As the birds appear to be interacting in a friendly manner, you can place them together. DO watch that the older bird does not bully the younger. If that happens, separate them again for a few more weeks. Don't install a nest for a few months. You don't want to encourage them to breed too soon.
