On November 25th it will have been six months since I found Bert, my pet canary. I found him while I was on my way to KFC to buy a very different kind of bird (fried chicken). He was literally huddled up in the gutter, so close to the sidewalk that I came close to stepping on him. I recognized him as a canary, rather than one our native finches, and promised myself that if he was still there when I returned from getting my supper I would take him home. As luck would have it, he was still there, and I took him home. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Bert has been such a joy to me over the last six months. This pretty little fellow has been a much needed source of happiness for a truly minimal cost of food (a box of seed, an apple or two, a cucumber or two,and some broccoli = maybe $3.00 - $4.00 per month at most), and care (changing food and water daily, and newspapers twice a week). I honestly do not know how I managed before he came, and I hope I can keep him both healthy and happy for a long time to come.
