: Hello, : I have a canary that has a mystery illness. I have taken him to the vet (twice) and he prescribed antibiotics each time (batril and something else that I can't remember. I gave both to him around April/May of this year). I have also purchased and given Bill (the canary) Scatt for airsac mites (around August and September of this year). However, he remains the same. Here's his short story - : : I bought Bill from a Petsmart in late March of this year. He was in the back of the store, in a cage by himself when we bought him. However, the petstore person said he had been in a cage with finches and they kinda picked on him so he was moved into the back by himself to recover. They said he sang like crazy in the back and sure enough he sang the very next morning after we brouht him home. He was quite a singer (he's yellow and black) and seemed pretty happy besides having a few misplaced feathers. He sang like crazy for about two or three weeks and then it started to diminish. Shortly thereafter, I noticed him breathing kinda hard, not quite as peppy, etc. Eventually, it got so bad he would close his left eye for most of the day. That's when I took him to the vet and got the antibiotics. The timeframe now is around May. The second trip to the vet and second antibiotic seemed to do the trick to help his eye and mouth breathing. Although, at times he does make quite a lot of noise when he breathes (clicking sound coming from his nostrils like he has a very, very, very bad headcold). : : Here's the problem....since around June or so, Bill hasn't made hardly a sound. No singing, chirping, etc. He tries to sing and chirp but he just can't get it out(can barely hear him). I see his mouth moving like crazy, but try as he might, nothing comes out. That's where we're at with him as of today. And, this has been going on since around mid-June. I should mention that I tried the Scatt around August and early September with hardly any luck. Although, there for a day or two he did make a slightly louder noise that he had been, but it's back to nothing at this point. Lastly, I tried another antibiotic called Amtyl. I gave it to the canary about two weeks ago for five days, but again no luck. : : Like I said, the main problem is he can't make a sound - chirping, singing, nothing. It's been such a dramatic change since he sang so much and so loud just six months ago when we bought him. : : I know this is a long message, but thank you for your time reading it. I've tried everything...I even wrote the Canary Society of America to get their advice. : Thanks for your reply and help. I appreciate it. I'm going crazy trying to cure him. : : Mike Canaries need to have the same light schedule as there is in nature. If there is a light on in the room when it is dark ouutside, then cover the cage with a large towel from dusk to dawn. What are you feeding your pet? Plain seed is like white bread is to people. Canaries need to have a wide variety of foods. Feed the bird a little bit of any fruit or vegetable that you eat yourself. Small amounts of chicken egg (cooked as for human consumption) is good, too. Also provide a little bit of whole wheat bread or corn bread. For more information, please see the Link.
