: You may recall that I had to cut my canary's nails a couple of months ago, and the resulting experience was horrible for both him and me. : Now Bert's nails have gotten long again. I do not want to have to trim them again if I can possibly avoid it, so I purchaced a mineral perch that is basically a coarse man made stone. I replaced one of his old wooden perches with it, and after a day or two of adjustment, he has started using it. : Will this be enough to wear down his nails so I won't have to trim them again? Sand perch covers and mineral perches should not be used. Birds need a comfortable surface for a perch. How would you like to walk in shoes with sand inside? Very quick growing nails might be due to mites. Canaries and keets should be sprayed with a fine mist of an avian insecticide that contains .05% pyrethrin as the active ingredient. Apply this once a week in the Summer and once a month in the Winter. When you clipped the bird's nails, you probably held him too tightly. If you compress a birds ribs with even a slight pressure, the little guy can't breathe! Birds need to be held very gently. The next time that the nails need to be clipped, you might consider taking the bird to a pet shop that provides this service. You can watch to see how it's done to learn how to do it yourself. In any event, DO have a styptic powder on hand to stop bleeding. You can obtain this from any good pet shop.
