: My female canary (being in her own cage) has just laid an egg!! What do I do? Can I put them together and hope that the rest of this cluch will be fertilised, or do I keep them seperate and when she stops laying the eggs to put them together? Are you in the Northern Hemispher? If so, a hen shouldn't be producing eggs now. Nature intends for canaries to breed in the Spring. Keep the birds in separate cages for now. Make sure that they receive the same schedule of light and dark as occurs in nature. If there is a light on in the room when it is dark outside, then keep the cages covered with a large towel from dusk to dawn. When the hen starts to build a nest in the Spring, place the birds together in the same cage. It's best to purchase a commercially prepared nestling food. You can get by with chopped chicken egg (cooked as for human consumption) mixed with whole wheat bread. For more information, please see the Link.
