: I am a novice to canaries in general. Just wanted a singer, but the bird my husband brought home started laying eggs. He then bought me a red-factored male that was a guaranteed singer, but after a month has not begun to sing. He will go back. Question is, my female lays eggs repeatedly, and I wonder if this is harmful to her. I've had her for nearly five months and she has layed one batch of five, and recently a batch of four, and is wanting to nest again. Is this healthy for her? I can throw away the eggs, but it seems cruel for her to continue to be laying with no offspring to show for it. Is it harmful to keep the male bird with her, or should he be kept in another room? Thanks for any insights. Canaries breed in the Spring. The nesting cycle is controlled by the number of hours of daylight. Make sure that the birds receive the same number of hours of light and darkness as occurs naturally each day. If there is a light in the room after dusk or befor dawn, cover the cage with a towel until the sun rises. Constant production of eggs is very stressful and can be fatal. Except during the breeding season, canaries should be housed one bird to a cage. The cages can be in the same room. For more information, see the Link.
