Canary FAQ

Posted by Juliette Fong on September 10, 2004 at 07:45:35:

Saturday a.m. woke up to find my budgie in a panic with her right leg pretty well useless. She's pucked half her underside and about 1/3 of the afflicted leg. Her underside has a yellow spot on it, her leg was a dark reddish purple.
Immediately I put her vitamin drops in her water and offered and even greater variety of food than I usually do thinking she'd eat what would help her more. I & my family were on a vigil to make it easy for her to eat & drink, bringing the water & food to her beak. She's made good improvement, partially thanks to a petshop owner we spoke with who told us the likely reason is that due to her being a chronic hen (she's laid 146 eggs) her body is using up all her calcium despite us supplementing her with block and grinding egg shell into her food. And suggested we give her liquid calcium in her water in the dilution of 1 cc to 1/2 water, for 7 days only. She's regained partial movement of her leg and digits, but one of her toes is purple at the end. She's growing back some feathers now so I can't see her coloration so well, but will examine her when I get back from work.
Please advise what else we can do for her and if you'd have a site which might show a list of bird doctors (in the Montreal city area). We had a number but we got it years ago and it's no longer good.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
