: Does a canary stop singing due to weather/ seasonal changes, like winter. I have had my roller canary for 6 months. From the day I bought him he was singing like a trooper. We have just come out of a 4 month winter here in South Africa and he did not sing throughout the winter and is not really singing now apart from a sporadic tweet here and there. : Is this normal? It's normal for a canary to stop singing during the moult. Moulting normally takes place in the Summer. Singing resumes in the Fall. The most common reasons that canaries fail to sing are improper lighting, vermin infestations, a harsh environment, and/or a poor diet. Canaries need the same hours of light as occurs in nature. If a light is on in the room at night, then cover the cage with a towel from dusk to dawn. The room where the bird is kept should be relatively quiet. In a place with loud music, screaming kids, barking dogs, or a cat leaping at the cage, you can't expect a canary to sing. Canaries, finches, and parakeets should be sprayed once a week with an avian insecticide that contains .05% pyrethrin as the active ingredient. For more information, see the Link.
