: : : I must say that I am a bit complicated about the canaries-advices that I read on the books.

: : : I am complicated regarding some tips and rules that are necessary to do because that’s right according to the nature’s rules

: : : To be more specific, I have read that :

: : : -We must use different thickness of the perches because birds are used in nature to stand in tree perches that have different thickness and that makes good for their feet...
: : : -We must put our canaries to a dark place after 8:00 because they are used to calm down after that specific time in nature.
: : : -We mustn’t make loud noises because canaries hear only soft noises in nature

: : : etc etc etc…

: : : I agree with all the above and respect these rules

: : : BUT in every book I read...I notice that it says that “Cages are like their homes because they haven’t grown in nature and they don’t feel it like a prison...

: : : So? Which info does the canary knows and which one not!

: : canaries are perfectly happy in their lil homes.if they were out in nature in my area they would die so captivity is the only way to have them.just turn on the music give them food and a window and they are happyyy birds.

: Costas,
: different sizes of perches is good because it exercises their feet and helps to keep the nails trimmed. I will sometimes take a small branch from outside and put it in the cage (usually they are smaller at one end and larger at the other). make sure it is clean. As far as quiet in the evening they will easily adjust to your schedule even if changes on a regular basis.
: Have fun with your new addition to the family.

Hello: I would also like to make a comment here. They need different size perches so that they don't always land in one spot on their feet as it can make their feet very sore and sometimes their nails have to be trimmed. Also their cage should be at least 26 inches long, 18 inches wide and about 11 inches high. They need about 14 hours sleep at night. You should put a dark cover that is not too heavy on their cage in the summer and a heavy one in winter if your home is too cold. Also just to let you know the cover gives him security. Also be careful about keeping your bird at a window. Keep him in a place where he gets some sun but that he can get out of the sun if he should get too hot. Would you like to be in hot sun and not be able to get out of it. Also make sure he does not get any drafts as that could kill him. Be gentle and kind and talk to him and you will have a very nice and loving pet.
Good Luck and please keep us posted.
Grace
