: How can I keep her from laying? There is not a male in the picture yet. She built a nest in her treat cup, I removed it a couple of times but she kept rebuilding them. So I left it alone and she has layed 4 eggs and is incubating them. How long should I let her nest? Make sure that the bird gets strictly the same amount of light as there is hours of daylight. If the room is lit at night, then cover the cage with a towel from dusk to dawn. It's best to let the bird sit on the eggs. That will minimize constant egg production. Laying one egg after another can kill a canary. Definitely make sure that the diet is vitamin, mineral, and protein enriched.
