: : My male canary acts extremely healthy, however he has never really sung again after he molted, months ago and I notice at times he kinda makes this clicking sound, sings very softly if at all,and when I talk to him,his peep is kinda hoarse.I have a hen now, right next to him,in a different cage. They both have all the requirements to be healthy and happy and seem to be. However,he doesn't seem interested in her and never sings!! Canaries require a proper light schedule. The room needs to be dark and quiet from dusk to dawn. If this isn't practical, then cover the cage with a large cloth. Canaries need good nutrition. Seed should be vitamin, mineral, and protein encriched. Every day, each bird should get a small amount of fruit, a small amount of greens and/or vegetables and a little bit of cooked chicken egg. All you need to do is to give the bird a little bit of any healthy food that you eat yourself. Mites and lice sap the bird's vitality. Spray the birds and the area around the cage once a week with an avian insecticide that contains .05% pyrethrin ad the active ingredient. Under the supervision of a veterinarian, mites can be eliminated using ivermectin. There are diseases that cause respiratory problems in birds. These conditions can only be diagnosed by a veterinarian after an examination.
