: I was going to say how wonderful Bert is doing, but his feathers have started to look a little rough, and he has lost a few, including two primary feathers, so I am beginning to think he is stressed in some way.

: The size of his cage is good (45 inches wide x 13 inches tall x 15 inches deep). He flies back and forth between the two perches at the end almost constantly during the morning and early afternoon each day. I always praise his flying, and he even does tricks for me, so I believe he enjoys the attention I give him. Having a cage door on either end of the front seems to be serving the purpose I intended it for, allowing me to change his water, seed, and newspapers on one side of the cage, while Bert stays on the other side.

: I change Bert's water every morning. He has two water containers, a smaller one about 3 inches in diameter, and a larger one about 6 inches in diameter. Both are filled with about a quarter inch of water each day. A third source of water, one of those bird water fountains, is available in the cage in case I can not be around to change the other two.

: I give Bert about a tablespoon of seed every morning. Is that enough? I am worried it might not be enough for him. Should I increase his ration? Canary seed is cheap enough that wastage isn't much of a concern. Bert is much more valuable to me than the food I give him

: I change the newspapars in the bottom of Bert's cage twice a week. I also remove the poop from one of his perches, and old orange crate, once a week.

: I've been giving Bert egg, apple, and brocolli in addition to his seed. I am currently out of apple and brocolli, and will have to get some soon.

: After sunset, I am always sure to cover the front of Bert's cage with a towel, so that none of my activity will disturb him. I always remove the towel when I go to bed, so he can wake up with the sunrise.

: Bert has become comfortable with his cage, and I can now leave the doors open without fear of him trying to get out.

: Bert is champion waster of my time. Whenever he starts flying back and forth, I cannot help but start watching.

: The temperature has been cool in the apartment for the last little while. I have been keeping it cool on purpose, because I do not have air conditioning, and I am expecting it to become hot and humid around here soon. Could the cool conditions be what is causing Bert to lose some of his feathers?

Pet birds need to have seed available at all times! Small birds like canaries can starve to death in hours. Use a deep dish. Don't use gravity feeders for seed. The bird will pick out favorite morsels and waste the rest.

From the change of environment, your pet might be going into a moult. Give a small amount of cooked chicken egg (as per human consumption) every day as a protein supplement.
