I spent the vast majority of my day yesterday building a new cage for Bert, which is what I've decided to call my new little friend. Most of the construction is finished. It is essentially a box 45 inches long by 13 inches tall by 15 inches deep. The bottom is lined with sheet alluminum to make the inevitable mess easier to clean. The front of the cage uses an old window screen that was no longer being used. The only things left to be constructed are the two doors. Rather than having a single door in the middle of the front, I decided to put a door on the left side and right side of the front. The theory is that I can reach into the cage on whichever side Bert is not on, which I hope will cause him less stress. I also have good news this morning. Bert has started to sing, which shows that he is on the mend, and started to become comfortable in his new suroundings. I suspect that he may have been hypothermic when I first brought him home on Tuesday. I suspect this, because his very first defication contained mostly clear yellow urine. I have been told that birds do not normally produce urine, because their body temperatures are too high, so I took this as a sign of an unusually low temperature. All droppings since then have had only the opaque white liquid one would normally expect from a bird.
