Having been a canary owner for less than 48 hours, I am definately not qualified to to answer any questions, but while looking for canary information on the net, I did come across mention of a condition called "egg binding". It is a condition in which a egg becomes lodged in the female bird's ovaduct when she is laying, and can kill the female within hours. It may be possible that this is what did your porr female canary in. :-(
