In Reply to: Found Canary: What do I do? posted by Mark on May 26, 2004 at 07:48:06:
Well, there are two important issues to point out: : On the way home, with a pack of canary seed I had bought, just in case, the little canary was still there in the same spot. On my first attempt to pick it up, the canary flew about four feet into the middle of the street. On my second attempt, it flew about thirty feet, and landed in a flower bed. Once in the flower bed, the tulips prevented the canary from taking off, and I easily captured it there. : So now I have the canary in my home, and I am not sure what to do. Having no cage, I put the tiny bird into my bathroom, assuming it would be the safest place for it to stay. I've put a few small piles of canary seed on the floor, along with a small plastic container of fresh water. I even put a flowerette of broccoli on the floor, because one of the web pages I looked at said that canaries needed greens, and recommended broccoli. : Although it has only been 14 hours or so, I have become concerned that the canary has not eaten or drunk at all, and continues not to move, except when I get too close, which appears to panic it, and make it attempt to fly. It is completely alert, but not moving otherwise. : It is spring time here in Eastern Ontario, and the last several days have been miserable, and only about 15 degrees C or 59 degrees F. It is also chilly here in my apartment. Could the cold be what is causing the canary's behaviour, assuming it had been outside for a few days, or could it just be the stress of being caught and brought home? : I really hope I can save this poor bird. Any advice would be helpful.
