: my first canary has symptoms of diminished singing and lost feathers resulting in small bald patches by the beak under the eyes. He rubs his beak frequently on perches after eating but is healthy in all other ways. suggestion for home care or is a vet necessary? Hi Carol: I had to take my first red factor canary 'Creamsicle' to the vet yesterday to end his suffering. We adopted him after some cruel person just let him go a year ago to fend for himself outside. He was the sweetest thing and I miss him dearly. Unfortunately I waited too long to take him to the vet and after three different medications: Ivermectin, Baytril and Zithromax he failed to get much better and was having very laboured breathing, had lost his face feathers because of conjuctivitis and was always wiping his face, yawning etc. Please take your canary to the vet to be sure and you will feel better and if necessary treatment can be started. I know it is so expensive and we always hesitate but it was too late for my little guy as birds wait a long time before they show symptoms. I put apple branches in my canary cage and he loved them and he loved to bath in a clear water dish in the bottom of the cage every day. Take care and hope all works out for you and your canary. If he stops singing then there is really something wrong as mine had but I didn't realize he was sick. Email me if you like anytime.
