Birds flying free are poisoned by house plants, paints and other household chemicals. They die flying into window glass and mirrors. Avian pets escape out open windows and doors. Fans are deadly obstacles. Birds chew on electric wires with deadly consequences. Also -- particularly with keets -- the bird flies behind a refrigerator or crawls into a small space and is unable to escape. Other pets are potential killers. I've even seen a parrot quickly rip the leg off of a an escaped finch that landed on the larger bird's cage. After considering all the hazards, it simply isn't responsible to allow a pet bird unrestricted flight. A pet bird should be housed in a cage that's large enough to provide the benefits of exercise. Sad to relate, many "professional" writers of bird books have a lot of experience as writers, but have little if any knowledge of bird-keeping. : I was very surprised by your statement, "My opinion is that pet birds should never be allowed to fly around the house. There's no benefit to the bird and many, many risks."
