I was very surprised by your statement, "My opinion is that pet birds should never be allowed to fly around the house. There's no benefit to the bird and many, many risks."
Everything I have read states that flying is the best form of exercise for birds. Our keets like to circle the room a few times then they climb around the top of their cage, fly some more, and return to their cage when they are ready. They have been doing this for over a year and expect it. If they don't get their flying time they loudly remind us. Is there any reason to change this pattern when the nesting box is presented to them? The box is to give them the opportunity to breed, not to force them to do so.
