Before getting a new bird, wait a week or so to attempt to be sure that death was not due to a contagious disease.

DO NOT put the new bird right in the same cage with the original bird! Place the newcomer in a separate cage right next to the one that you now have. When you see the birds socializing through the bars, then you can put them together.
