: my first canary has symptoms of diminished singing and lost feathers resulting in small bald patches by the beak under the eyes. He rubs his beak frequently on perches after eating but is healthy in all other ways. suggestion for home care or is a vet necessary? If any watering, swelling or irritation is noticed, immediately consult a veterinarian. The perches are the bird's napkin. It's important to keep the perches clean. The easiest course of action is just to replace the sticks a couple of times a year. The perches can also be cleaned in a strong solution of bleach and pine oil, rinsed and then dried in the sun. DO NO use the perch covers that are sold for bird cages! Perch covers are very uncomfortable for a bird and can result in sprains from slipping. To control mites and lice, once a week, mist the bird, the cage, and the area around the cage with an avian insecticide that contains .05% pyrethrin as the active ingredient.
