: : : We have a 2 year-old male parakeet. We will be leaving for a week, with no one to watch the bird. Can we leave enough food and water for him? He would probably be worse off if we took him on the road, but we wnat to make sure he is safe. Has anyone had expereinces with leaving their bird for an extended period of time? : : Yoo can't leave a bird alone for a week. If at all possible, make arrangements for someone to come in to provide food and water. If that's not practical, then you need either to bring the bird to a friend's house or to board your keet at a local pet shop. : That's kind of what I thought. We'll have to leave him at a friend's house. Will that be too traumatic of a change for him (new surroundings)? As long as the cage is kept is a good environment (no drafts, not in direct sun, light during the day, quiet and dark at night, and a temperature that's comfortable for people, no pets or children scaring/attacking the bird), everything should be OK. DO make sure that your friend understand that birds MUST HAVE FOOD in the cage at all times! A small bird can starve to death in a day! I've seen people that didn't understand birds, put food in the cage for ten minutes, THEN REMOVE IT! That was how they fed their dog and assumed that birds were the same.
