: Our parakeets laid eggs and one hatched about 4 weeks ago. We would like to start holding the baby but are not sure if the time is right. Also we thought that we would like to put her in another cage in another part of the house. Could you tell us if this is a good idea or not. Also there ar about 4 eggs still in the nesting box, would it be safe to assume they are no good and remove them. Thanks Steve

You have to watch to see how the hen reacts. If the hen accepts your removing and handling the nestling, then you may continue to do so. If she becomes agitated, you are taking the risk of her abandoning the nest.

Is the baby out of the nest? Is the little guy eating on his own? If the youngster is taking care of himself, then you can move it to another cage.

Do you intend to train the baby? If yes, taking it out of sight of the parents is a good idea. Keep in mind that a parakeet by itself depends on you for company.

If the remaining eggs are from the same clutch as the baby, those eggs are infertile. To be on the safe side, I'd first mark each egg with a felt-tipped pen. After a few days, hold the egg up to a light. If it's either clear or murky, the egg is dead and can be discarded. After a few days of incubation, when held up to a light, an egg shows a network of veins. A couple of days after that, the egg will appear solid like a marble.
