: my canaries have not been using the cuttlebone and i have noticed one is very long. Will they go on their own or can i trim it? You can encourage the birds to use the cuttlebone by putting a few scratches in it. The cuttlebone is a source of calcium. It's not needed to keep a bird's beak the proper length. I've never seen a canary's beak that was longer than normal. I have seen this in keets. The cause was mites. Mites in canaries generally affect the feet.
