Small birds eat a lot! Parakeets (canaries and finches, too) must have food available at all times. These little guys can starve to death in as little as one day. Parakeets crack open the seeds -- disposing of the husk -- before they eat. The empty hulls have no nutritional value. Use a dish for the birds' food, not a gravity dispenser. In search of their favorite tidbits, the birds will quickly empty out tube feeders, wasting the food on the floor of the cage. In addition to seed, also offer the birds small amounts of any healthy fresh food that you eat. : I just recently bought a pair of beautiful keets. Since I'm still new at this, I'm not really sure what I can and can not feed them. Also how many times a day do I change their food. I've noticed that they crack open the seeds and just make a big mess. Are they suppose to eat alot?
