: : Just a few months ago I purchased a canary. He has begun molting and I am aware of the fact that they won't sing while molting. Can anyone give me a general idea of how long the molting will last and when he'll start to sing again? He is not quite a year old.

: Hello:
: A canary will usually molt for about 8 weeks.
: I don't know where you live but it seems a little early in the season for him to be molting so give him good care and molting food and a lot of green vegatables and apple once in a while because they also tend to be a little extra nervous when molting and need peace and quiet.
: Good Luck, Grace

Thank you, Grace. I knew it was quite early for him to be molting. I have been following the instructions in a book I bought and discovered I was probably exposing him to the light for too long a period during the day. I have since started covering him earlier and shutting off the lights in the room. It is still a problem with not singing. I called the breeder and she told me not to worry, that he would start singing. Well, it has been since the last of March and he still isn't singing. He seems to make attempts to sing but it is very soft and not a complete song. He loses a very of the soft feathers once in a while and the other day, I saw him with a large wing or tail feather in his mouth. I have not witnessed him plucking his feathers, but he does chew on the ones he has lost. He's being fed conditioning food, lettuce, apple, and carrots along with his regular feed. Once in a while, I see him sitting there all puffed up. I don't know if that's a symptom of a problem or not. I know I am quite concerned about him. I don't have access to an avian vet around this area. I live in the midwest. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you Grace.
