: I just purchased a white male American Singer. I was told by the breeder that he might not start singing until Nov. I was told he is 10 months old, he is not banded. I have not heard him sing at all and was wondering if a recording of other canaries is needed to teach him to sing, or if it is better to trade him in for a different singing male. He is a beautiful pure white with black eyes, very pretty thats why I bought him! He is very active, even tears off pieces of the paper towel on the cage floor, could this mean he is a female wanting to make a nest?Hello Pam: Who did you purchase your little bird from? Was it from a breeder or a pet store. if he was 10 months old when you purchased him he should have been starting to sing if it is a male. As far as pulling and tearing paper it could ment that the bird is female but at times males will play with paper also so it is hard to say about that. I am a lover of canaries and I myself hate to return them because I do feel that they have feelings and returning them and maybe changing them to much can be upsetting to them but again that is up to you. I do feel that if a person sold this canary to you as a male singer then you should get some money back if it is a female but that is up to you. Could this little bird be moulting right now. If it is moulting then it should sing when he stops moulting. If you decide to keep him try playing some music of any kind for him and also run water because a male will sing to that. Remember if you are purchasing a canary and you want a male singer do not buy unless you hear the bird sing first. I wish you luck. Grace
