: I have a year old canary. When I got him I played my canary songs and he did sing, but not very strong. In Feb. he started moulting. That has stopped. now he doesnt want to sing I went to pet store and go .. Song restorer. I thought sure he would sing. He will sing if I play records or if I sing.. But it is very weak. I have not heard him sing. Unless there is music. Have I programed this bird wrong? My last canary sang even when covered. and some times even in the night. I though at first maybe I had a female. But he does have a song when he wants to.. DO female sing at all? and how can you sex a bird.. thanks for reading. and I will try anything.. Janice
Well I don't know what to tell you.
You could have a female but it is hard to tell.
You have the bird for a year and if it were a female she should have laid eggs about this time unless her molting so early in the year could thrown her cycle off.
She should lay eggs and then be molting around June.
It sounds as though you canary could be a female but it is hard to say. Female canaries do sing but nothing like a male.
Do you give the bird green vegetables and fruite along with seed and sond food.
You should also give her a calcium supplement.
She did molt too early in the season but then where do you live and how warm is it there?
There are so many questions that it is hard to tell you exactly without knowing the details.
I wish you good luck with your little bird and please let us know how you are doing with the bird.
