: Hi, I bred my canaries for the first time in my life, but now I don't know how to distinguish between male & female chicks! Friends are asking for male chicks, and I don't know how I can be sure I gave them the correct sex! Are there any signs or body parts that will allow me to distinguish male from female? Thanks in advance for your help! Hello Anna: You cannot tell the difference in the male and female canary by looking at them. Even experts cannot tell. You can only tell by the song and sometimes both male and female will sing. The only way you can be sure is if the hen lays eggs which is when she is about a year old. The male usually has a much stronger song then the female. Even expert breeders can't tell. |
