The second clutch hatched and I had two very healthy looking chicks that lived for two days..I came home one night and found them dead in the nest. They looked dehydrated and almost as if they had been smashed or smothered in nest..I do know the mother hen had been sitting on the nest tightly..how can I prevent this from happening again? </font></font> <font face=arial size=2>: Hello Jackie:</font> <font face=arial size=2>: It sounds as though Mom is not feeding the chicks.</font> <font face=arial size=2>: Also as strange as it sounds if there were only 2 chicks in the nest maybe her weight was too heavy and they were crushed. If you can put some fake eggs in the nest her weight may be more evenly distributed. If you have any older females around maybe you can take the chicks out and they will care for them.
