Hello:
One thing for sure if you think getting a girl friend or even a cage mate that is not the answer.

Male canaries are loners and like their own space.
Do you see any loose feathers in the cage? If you do he could be molting and will not sing until that is over and this is the time of the year they usually do molt.

Have a little patience with him, treat him well, feed him good food and lots of green vegatables and a wedge of apple. Make sure he is not in a draft and cover him at nights so that he leeps well and long enough. There are so many reasons for a canary not singing so try what I am suggesting and if there is still a problem post another and I will try to help you.
