: : Could you advise regarding problem of canary losing feathers and going bald around her neck.Should i supplement her diet in some way or could it be a problem with mites that needs to be treated. She does not appear to be poorly and is still eating well.
: This sometimes happens late during the breeding
: season or in the regular moult.
: At these times, this condition is normal and the feathers can be expected to grow back.
: This late in the fall, there's a problem. The possible causes are:
: 1) Mites and/or lice. ALL cage birds should be sprayed once a week with a pyrethrin insecticide (available from any pet shop).
: 2) Poor nutrition. Make sure that the bird is getting enough protein and vitamins. Feed a vitamin enriched seed. Vitamins in the water are also very good. As always, make sure that the water is fresh and the dish is clean. Every day, give the canary a small amount of chicken egg cooked as for human consumption.
: 3) Improper environment. The bird should only be getting the same number of hours as there is in natural daylight. The temperature should be in the range of 50 to 75 degrees (F). If the temperature is getting much higher, as is quite possible if the bird is in teh kitchen or near a radiator, an irregular moult may be the result.
Thank you so much for your reply and advice.I intend to follow all advice which is applicable and hope she improves as a result.Keep up the good work.Yours sincerely Margo
