Canaries and Gender ???

I have two babies left from a July hatching. they are in the flight cage with Mom and all seems to be well. Dad is upstairs in his own cage and signing his little heart out. I have to bring DAd downstairs to clean his cage every week and when I do he creates havoc with the birds in the flight cage. One of the youngsters starts chasing the others around, spreading his/her wings and hissing at the others. Neither of these young ones have really started singing to indicate that they are males but every afternoon I hear from both of them chirping that sounds a little like singing. Once I put DAd back upstairs harmony returns to the flight cage in a few hours. Any ideas?
