When I got my budgie Cheech at 4 months old he only knew how to eat seeds (mainly canary and millet sprays). I've successfully taught him to eat new foods such as dark green leafy vegetables and groats with a simple method.
After the bird accepts seeds from your fingers, hand feed a new food your bird refuses to try. Break off a tiny piece and offer it. Be persistant but do not force feed him. If he really doesn't want to try the food forget about it. After all he won't be tempted to try something that he associates with a bad experience.
After Cheech first accepted the first piece of food he spit it out like a seed hull. Once again use gentle persistance. Eventually the bird will begin to roll the food in his beak and swallow it. Break off larger pieces of the food each time until the bird will accept the whole seed (as with hulled sunflower seeds or larger ones according to the size of your birds beak). With leaves and fruit and vegetable peels the bird will eventually break bite sized pieces from the leaf or peel.
I've had no success in even getting Cheech to try a pellet with this method. Good luck !!!!
